“My name is Asnaku Taye; I am 14 and a Grade 6 student in Anaso Sego Primary School. I live with my father, mother, 3 brothers and 4 sisters. All my sisters and brothers are attending classes in the newly constructed Anaso Sego Primary School. I attended Grade 1-5 at Abdisa Aga Primary School in Fitche town which is around 5 kilometres away from my home. The journey to my previous school was an average 2 hour round trip every day. My parents enrolled me in Abdisa Aga school in search of a better education. However, the trips to and from school were very hard on top of my duties at home.
This year I am enrolled in to Anaso Sego Primary School which is only 5 minutes from home. I decided to change my school for a number of reasons. The first is that it is nearer to my home and I am able to save my time and energy. Secondly, I am not worried about possible violence on the way to and from school. Thirdly, I am attracted by the new facilities – the classrooms, student desks, separate toilets, drinking water, the library and the learning centre.
This year I have used all the facilities in the new school and as a result I have improved my academic achievement. Since I have devoted my time and my parents supported my education, this year I stand 3rd with an average score of 91%. I am very happy that I have been awarded a book and radio in the first and second semesters. Hence, this motivates me much and helps me to perform better for the coming year. Thanks to this, I have got a very good opportunity that could help me realize my dream of being a good teacher.”
